Softball Splits Doubleheader with #15 William Carey

COCHRAN, GA - Softball jumped ahead early in game 1 versus the #17 William Carey Crusaders for a 9-1 win then fell behind in game 2 for a 7-2 loss.  The split moves the Knights record to 23-17 on the season and 10-10 in SSAC play while the Crusaders are now 28-10 overall and 16-6 in SSAC play.  

The Knights jumped out front early in game 1 with Madison Bivins hitting a 2-run homerun in the botoom of the 1st.  Caroline Newton was in the circle for the Knights going 6.0 innings with only 5 hits allowed, no walks, and one earned run while striking out 3.  While Newton held down the Crusaders, Margaret Simmons led off the 3rd with her 4th home run of the season for a 3-0 lead.  The Crusaders got a lead off double in the 5th followed by a sac bunt and RBI ground out to push across their only run.  The Knights got a pair in the 5th as Maggie Burkhalter had a 2-run single for a 5-1 lead.  Newton stranded 2 more in the 6the and the Knights scored 4 runs on 4 hits in the 6th.  An RBI walk by Emilie Lawrence scored the 6th run followed by an RBI single for Lauren Heath and a wild pitch to score two more and an 8-1 lead.  Sydney Shackelford completed the game with a single to score the 9th run of the game and end the game in the 6th.

In game 2, Shackelford moved to the circle for the Knights and after getting the first two outs on ground outs to start the game, the Crusaders got a single and double to take a 1-0 lead.  The Knights threatened with a pair of hits in the 2nd but got nothing.  Leading 1-0 in the 4th, the Crusaders plated 4 runs on 4 hits including a 3-run home run by Harli Crow and a 5-0 lead.  The Crusaders added another pair in the 5th for a 7-0 lead.  The Knights coul not get any offense going until the bottom of the 7th when Simmons hit her 2nd home run of the day and 5th of the season with a 2run home run to center.  The Crusaders got the final 2 outs after the home run for the win.

The Knights and Crusaders will face off again on Saturday, April 13 at 1PM in Cochran, GA to finish the 4-game series.  The Knights will play their final home games of the season on Tuesday, April 16 starting at 2PM when they host Brewton Parker College.
