THOMASVILLE, GA - The Knights baseball team opened the season with a 3-game sweep of the Thomas University NightHawks taking game 3 of the series by a score of 5-3 on Sunday, January 27th. The win followed an opening win of both games of the doubleheader on Saturday the 26th starting the Knights at 3-0 for the second straight season. Preston Sparks earned the win and Devan Harriman the save. Bucky McGlamrey hit his first homerun of the season.
Kyle Anderson got the start for the Knights and took an inning to settle in, giving up 2 runs in the first inning off 2 hits before stranding 3 as the Knights trailed 2-0 after an inning was complete. The Knights got one back in the 2nd as Blake Jackson walked to lead off the inning and later scored on a double by Robbie Hanlon. The NightHawks got a runner on by error in the 2nd but no hits and stranded one. In the 3rd, Jacob Durant reached on an error to start off the inning the stole 2nd and moved to 3rd on a groundout by Zach Cornell. Jackson doubled to score Cornell and tie the game at 2 before the inning ended. Anderson gave up a hit in the 3rd but got a pair of fly outs around a hit-by-pitch to end the inning tied at 2. Luke Parks singled in the 4th but was stranded and Anderson sat down the NightHawks 1-2-3 for the first time to stay knotted at 2. The Knights got to work in the top of the 5th on Durant's lead-off double followed by back-to-back walks by Cornell and Jackson. Durant scored on a fielder's choice by MJ Rookard to take the lead and Cornell scored on a passed ball for the 4-2 lead. Sparks took over for Anderson in the 5th and gave up a run on one hit and a walk but held the lead 4-3. Neither team scored in the next two innings as Sparks sat the NightHawks down 1-2-3 but the Knights scored again in the top of the 8th on McGlamrey's solo homerun (1) to go up 5-3. Colby Mullins came on to relieve Sparks in the bottom of the 9th and walked the first batter before being replaced by Harriman who walked one stranded both to get the save and the win for the Knights to move to 3-0.
The Knights will travel to south Florida to take on #24 Keiser University for a 3-game series on February 1st (2 games) and 2nd. The home opener for the Knights will be a 3-game series starting Friday, February 8 at 1pm and 4pm against #6 St. Thomas University (Fla.) at Stuckey Field in Cochran, GA.
