Baseball Splits Doubleheader with #6 St. Thomas University

COCHRAN, GA - The Knights home opener against the #6 St. Thomas University Bobcats ended up with a split of the double header on Friday, February 8 with the Knights taking game 1 by a score of 4-2 and the Bobcats taking game 2, 12-6.  The Knights are now 4-1 on the season and the Bobcats 4-2 with the rubber game of the series on Saturday, February 9 at 12 pm at Stuckey Field in Cochran, GA.

Game 1 saw the Knights strike first in the bottom of the 2nd with a solo home run by MJ Rookard, his first of the season.  Alex Snider threw 5.0 innings of shutout baseball striking out 2 and allowing just 3 hits as neither team scored again in the first 6 innings.  The Knights struck again in the bottom of the 7th with a pair of runs on 3 hits.  Rookard ledd off with a single and Robbie Hanlon tripled down the right field line to score Rookard.  Chris Burgess singled to score Hanlon and put the Knights up 3-0.  Logan Carter came on in relief in the 6th for the Knights and gave up just on hit in his first 2 innings but the Bobcats struck for 2 runs on 2 hits and 1 error by the Knights in the top of the 8th to cut the lead to 3-2.  After Jacob Durant led off the 8th with a single, moved around to 3rd on a passed ball and sacrifice fly, allowing him to score on a groundout by Rookard for an insurance run and 4-2 lead.  Carter struck out a pair of Bobcats in the 9th around a hit by pitch, walk, and pop out to end the game and earn the save.

Game 2 saw more scoring starting with some early fireworks by the Knights.  Blake Jackson hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the first for the early lead and Trent Nash hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 2nd.  Those, along with a Luke Parks RBI single had the Knights up 5-1 after 2.  The Bobcats chased starter Jason Gifford in the 3rd and scored 4 runs before Jackson Braden was able to end the inning in a 5 all tie.  Jackson broke the tie in the bottom of the 3rd with his 2nd home run of the game, 3rd of the season for a 6-5 lead.  Braden struggled in the 4th and was replaced by Preston Sparks but the Bobcats had taken a 10-6 lead by the end of the inning.  The Bobcats got a run in the 5th and another in the 6th for their 12 and the Knights lost the game 12-6.

The same two teams meet in the rubber game of the series at 12 pm on Saturday, February 9.  The Knights will be at home again on February 15 and 16 as they host Talladega College for a 3-game series starting at 3pm on Friday with a signle game and doubleheader on Saturday the 16th beginning at 1pm.
