MONTGOMERY, AL - The men's tennis program opened up their season with a loss to NCAA DII member and former SSAC and NAIA Champion Auburn University-Montgomery by a score of 4-3 on Friday, February 1. The Knights won all three double matches to take the point for doubles played under NCAA rules as the doubles account for a single point compared to NAIA play when each doubles match counts for an individual point.
In doubles, Yuri Syromoltov and Lucas De Freitas defeated Straker-Meads and Garcia 7-6 at the #1 spot while Jimmy Merah and Alejandro Prad took the #2 spot from Veglia and Jimenez 6-4. Octavio Tamola and Santion Romeo defeated Bellio and Lind at #3 by a score of 7-5.
In singles, Merah won the #3 singles match 6-4, 7-5 over Veglia and Prada took the #5 spot from Lind 6-3, 6-2 for the two singles points. Syromoltov lost at #1 in 3 sets as did #4 De Freitas and #6 Romeo in 3rd set tiebreakers.
The Knights next match will be February 9 at John Drew Smith Tennis Center (JDS) against #24 Point University for a men's only match at 11AM. The Knights will then open SSAC play with the SSAC Roundup in Mobile, AL when they face #4 William Carey on February 14 then #11 Mobile and Blue Mountain College on the 15th while finishing out against (RV) Loyola on the 16th. The Knights will return home on the 28th to face (RV) Indiana Wesleyan then host #8 Cumberland March 4 and #9 Campbellseville March 5 at JDS in Macon, GA.
