COCHRAN, GA - The softball team rebounded from a pair of losses on opening day, Friday, February 8, to take game 1 of the doubleheader on Saturday the 9th with a walk-off triple by Margaret Simmons, 4-3, then lost game 2 by a score of 8-0 in 5 innings to the Point University Skyhawks. The split has the Knights opening the season at 1-3.
Game 1 had the Knights go up early 1-0 in the first on an RBI double by Taylor Sheffield. Both pitchers settled in and gave up a combined 4 hits over the next 3 innings before the Skyhawks struck with 3 runs on 5 hits in the top of the 5th. The Knights got one back in the bottom of the inning as Ny'Asia Howard scored on an error by the Skyhawks and the Knights trailed 3-2. In the bottom of the 7th, Simmons came to the plate with 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd and hit a triple to right-center scoring a pair for the win. Caroline Newton got the win for the Knights throwing 7 innings with a strike out, 8 hits given up and 3 earned runs.
Game 2 saw neither team score for the first 2 innings then the Skyhawks struck with 7 in the top of the 3rd chasing starter Sydney Shackleford from the game with 2 outs in the inning. The Skyhawks got another run in the top of the 5th for an 8-0 lead and the Knights stranded runners on 1st and 3rd in the bottom of the 5th to end the game.
The Knights will host a total of 8 games in two days on February 15 and 16 as Montreat College (NC), Pikeville (KY), and Coastal Georgia visit for the weekend. The Knights play at 10am and 2pm on Friday, then 10am and 4pm on Saturday.
