Softball Wins Pair of Games Versus Montreat and Pikeville

COCHRAN, GA - Softball finished day one of their two day, round-robin event with a pair of wins taking down Montreat College (NC) 9-1 in the 10am game and winning the 2pm game 8-7 in 8 innings over the University of Pikeville (KY).  The wins put the Knights at 3-3 on the season.

In game 1, the Knights jumped out to an early lead as Meagan Coleman hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 1st for her 1st homerun of the year and an early 4-0 lead.  The Cavaliers got a run back in the top of the 3rd but the Knights added 2 in the bottom of the inning on a 2-run double by Lauren Heath.  The Knights extended the lead to 9-1 in the 4th with 3 more runs on 5 hits.  Caroline Newton had an RBI double, Margaret Simmons had a sacrifice fly, and Coleman singled to the left side for the 3 runs.  Newton finished off the game with a 1-2-3 5th inning for a run-rule win as she allowed just 4 hits and an unearned run striking out 1.

Game 2 for the Knights was against Pikeville that went back and forth.  The Bears struck first with a run in the first but the Knights got one in the 2nd on Coleman's 2nd homer of the day to tie the game.  Newton doubled in the 3rd to score Madison Bivins and take the lead 2-1.  Pikeville put a 4 spot in the 4th on 3 hits to lead 5-2.  The Knights were not done and socre 4 of their own on 4 hits in the 6th to take the lead back 6-5.  With two outs in the 6th, the Knights got an RBI single from Bivins, 2-run double from Newton, and RBI single from Taylor Sheffield.  The Bears tied the game in the 7th to force extra innings.  Using the International Tie Breaker Rule, the Bears started with a runner on 2nd and drover her home with a double for the 7-6 lead.  The Knights scored the tying run on an RBI single by Newton with 2 outs then Sheffield singled home Ny'Asia Howard for the win.  Coleman pitched all 8 innings for the Knights striking out 4 and allowing 5 earned runs on 9 hits and 4 walks.

The Knights will face Pikeille in the 10am game on Saturday, February 16th at Knights Field then College of Coastal Georgia in the 4pm game to conclude the event.
