Softball Loses Early Game to Bears, Hands Mariners 1st Loss in Late Game

COCHRAN, GA - The softball team started the day out with an early 5-0 loss to the Pikeville Bears but won the night cap by handing the College of Coastal Georgia Mariners their first loss of the season, 2-1.

The Knights gave up a run in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 2 in the 7th of the first game as the Bears pitcher scattered the Knights 5 hits across 7 innings.  Sydney Shackelford threw 7.0 innings for the Knights allowing 4 earned runs and 10 hits with 4 strike outs to take the loss.  Three defensive errors also were not helpful to the effort for the Knights.

The team put the first game out of their mind as they prepared to play in the late game which started at 5PM after playing the 10AM game.  The Knights had Caroline Newton on the mound who gave up a run in the first inning before settling in to throw 7.0 innings with 5 hits, 10 strikeouts, 0 walks, and just the one run allowed.  The Knights got a pair of two out runs in the first as Meagan Coleman singled home Newton and Taylor Sheffield scored on a wild pitch.  The Knights made it stand including a fantastic defensive play on a relay from centerfielder Ny'Asia Howard to Madiosn Bivins to catcher Lauren Heath to make the tag at the plate and keep the lead in the top of the 6th.

The Knights next game will be at home on Wednesday, February 20 as they host the Columbus State Cougars at 2 PM for a doubleheader.
