COCHRAN, GA - The Knights softball team won their opening doubleheader for Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) play on Friday, March 8 with a pair of 2-1 wins over the Blue Mountain College Toppers and earned their 9th and 10th wins of the season. The team is now 10-6 overall and 2-0 in SSAC play.
The Knights had Caroline Newton in the circle for game 1 and she threw 8.0 innings allowing just 2 hits, 1 walk, and 1 unearned run while striking out 6. The Knights got an RBI sinlge from Margaret Simmons to score Madison Bivins in the 4th to tie the game then an RBI single from Taylor Sheffield in the bottom of the 8th for the walkoff win scoring Maggie Burkhalter.
In game 2, the Knights jumped out in front 2-0 in the 1st when Simmons singled past the shortstop with runners on 1st and second but the left fielder misplayed the ball which rolled to the fence allowing Newton and Shefflied to score. Those were the only 2 hits for the Knights in the game with Newton's double and Simmons single in the 1st but they made it count. Newton started the game in the circle for the Knights going 2.2 innings with 5 hits allowed and 1 earned run while striking out 2. Sydney Shackelford came in with 2 outs in the 3rd and got out of a 2-on, 2-out situation with a liner to short. Shackelford finsihed the game with 4.1 innings pitched allowing just 2 hits, a pair of walks, and a strikeout.
The Knights and Toppers meet on Saturday, March 9 for the second doubleheader in the 4-game series starting at 1PM in Cochran. The Knights will then have a pair of road dates at Point University on March 14 and at Brewton-Parker College on March 19 before returning home to host Bethel University on March 22 and 23.
