COCHRAN, GA - The Knights' softball team followed their pair of 2-1 wins on Friday, with another pair on Saturday the 9th over Blue Mountain College. The Knights won game 1 by a score of 3-0 and ended game 2 in 5 innings with a 10-1 victory. The wins put the Knights at 12-6 on the season and 4-0 in SSAC play.
Game 1 saw a gem pitched by Caroline Newton with 7.0 innings pitched allowing no runs, 6 hits, and a pair of walks while striking out 7. Margaret Simmons hit a 2-run home run in the 1st (her 2nd of the season) and Emilie Lawrence added an RBI single in the 6th as Newton shut down the Toppers with some excellent defense behind her.
Game 2 had Sydney Shackelford in the circle for the Knights who got support in the 1st from Taylor Sheffield's RBI single and Meagan Coleman's 3-run home run (her 3rd of the season) for an early 4-0 lead. Back-to-back doubles by Newton and Simmons led off the 3rd to score a run for the Knights and a 5-0 lead. RBI singles by Maggie Burkhalter and Madison Bivins in the inning along with an RBI fielder's choice by Shackelford had the Knights up 8-0 after 3 complete. The Knights extended the lead to 10 in the 4th with RBI fielder's choices by Coleman and Brittany Wilt. Shackelford threw 5.0 innings allowing 6 hits and a walk with one unearned run and 4 strike outs to earn the win as the Toppers got a run in the top of the 5th on an error by the Knights paired with 2 hits.
Shackelford is now 4-2 on the season and Newton is 6-2 as the Knights move to a road date at Point University on March 14 then doubleheaders at home on the 15th against Lindsey Wilson College and the 16th against Edward Waters College.
