Softball Splits Doubleheader at Point Skyhawks

WEST POINT, GA - Softball traveled to take on the Point University Skyhawks on Thursday, March 14 and came out with a split of the doubleheader.  The Skyhawks took game 1 by a score of 2-0 with game 2 going the way of the Knights 3-1.  Caroline Newton threw 6.0 innings in game 1 striking out 3 and giving up 5 hits with 2 earned runs and receiving the loss.  Game 2 had Sydney Shackelford in the circle going 7.0 innings with 1 strike out allowing 5 hits, 3 walks, and 1 earned run as she claimed the win.  

Game 1 saw the Knights with just a pair of hits as Madison Bivins and Emilie Lawrence each had a hit in the game.  The pitcher's duel saw a total of 7 hits in the game (5 for Point, 2 for MGA).  Bivins's hit came in the 1st as she tripled with one out but was stranded after a pair of groundouts.  The Skyhawks manufactured a run in the 2nd with a single followed by a sacrifice bunt followed by a single and fielder's choice to lead 1-0 after 1.  The Knighs got their next hit in the 5th as Lawrene singled with 2 outs before Lauren Heath reached on an E6 but both were stranded.  In the 6th, Bivins reachd on an error by the thirdbaseman with one out but was stranded at 2nd after a walk advanced her.  The Skyhawks got a lead off double, another sacrifice bunt, and a single to get an insurance run then got the Knights 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th to get the win.

Game 2 started as another pitcher's duel with the teams getting just 1 hit through 3 innings and the Knights out-hit the Skyhawks 6 to 5 for the game.  The Skyhawks got to starter Shackelford first in the 5th with a wild pitch allowing a runner to score from 3rd for the 1-0 lead.  In the 6th, the Knights' bats came to life with 4 hits to produce 3 runs.  Ny'Asia Howard got a 1-out single and stole second then scored on a single by Bivins.  Newton tripled home Bivins for the go-ahead run then scored on a single by Margaret Simmons for the 3-1 lead.  Shackelford sat down 6 of the next 7 batters for the Skyhawks with just a walk to close out the game and the win.
