COCHRAN, GA - The softball team won a pair of close games with the Edward Waters College Tigers 4-3 and 5-2. The wins put the Knights at 15-7 on the season having won 7 of their last 8 games and 12 of the last 15. Taylor Sheffield led the team with 4 hits on the day, Maggie Burkhalter had 4 RBI, and Maragaret Simmons scored 3 runs. Meagan Coleman earned the win in game 1 and Sydney Shackelford in game 2.
Game 1 saw the Knights go up 1-0 with an RBI single from Taylor Sheffield in the 1st. The Knight struck again in the 3rd for 3 runs as RBI singles by Lauren Heath and Savannah Osborne scored a pair and Heath came around to score on an error by the Tigers' thirdbaseman. With a 4-0 lead, Meagan Coleman cruised for 5 innings allowing just one hit and no runs through 5 but the Tigers got to her in the 6th with 3 runs on 5 hits. The Tigers got another 2 hits in the 7th but Coleman closed out the game for the 4-3 win. She struck out 8 batters in 7.0 innings with no walks for the win.
In Game 2, the Tigers struck first with a pair of runs on a walk, an error, and a wild pitch. The Knights got just 3 hits in the first 3 innings and trailed 2-0 headed to the 4th. In the bottom of the 4th, Sheffield led off with a hit-by-pitch and Margaret Simmons walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd. With 2 outs, Maggie Burkhalter hit her first home run of the season on a 3-2 pitch to give the Knights a 3-2 lead. Back-to-back doubles by Simmons and Coleman to start the 6th plated another run and Simmons scored on an error by the shortstop for the 5-2 lead. Sydney Shackelford went 7.0 innings and allowed just 2 hits and 3 walks with 7 strike outs and 2 unearned runs to earn the win for the Knights.
The Knights will travel to Mount Vernon, GA on Tuesday the 19th to take on SSAC rival, Brewton-Parker College for a doubleheader then return hom on the 22nd and 23rd to host Bethel University in a 4-game series.
