MOBILE, AL - The Knights softball team headed to Mobile to take on the #6 ranked Rams with a 12-2 SSAC record and 30-7 overall and split the 4-games taking the first and last game of the series. After splitting the first doubleheader, the Knights lost game 1 by a score of 6-1 but won 3-0 in game 2. The Knights are now 9-5 in SSAC play and 22-12 on the season which is one win short of the program's most wins since joining the NAIA when they had 23 in 2017.
Game 1 saw the Rams score 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd on starter Sydney Shackelford and 2 in the 5th. The Knights got a single run on Caroline Newton's RBIdouble in the top of the 5th to score Margaret Simmons who was 3 for 4 having 3 of the 5 hits for the Knights, including 2 doubles. Shackelford took the loss going 6.0 innings and allowing 9 hits and 1 walk with 6 earned runs. Her record stands at 9-5 on the season with a 4.20 ERA in 93.1 innings pitched.
Game 2 had Caroline Newton on the mound and she threw 8 innings allowing just 3 hits and 0 runs scored with 2 walks and 5 strike outs. She gave up 2 hits in the 3rd and 1 in the 6th walking 1 in the 1st and 1 in the 7th but no other baserunners. The Knights had 7 hits in the game with 3 coming in the top of the 8th. With 1 out, Simmons doubled and came around to score on Caroline Newton's single. Emilie Lawrence had reached on an error then scored after Simmons on Meagan Coleman's 2-run double for a 3-0 lead headed to the bottom of the 8th. Newton got a pop out and 2 ground outs to get the win. She is now 10-5 on the season with a 1.75 ERA and had her 2nd shut out of the week.
The Knights will be on the road at Faulkner for another SSAC matchup on April 5-6 in Montgomery, AL then back home on April 9 when they host the Brewton Parker College Barons for a doubleheader. After hosting the William Carey Crusaders on April 12-13 in a 4-game series, the team will finish their final 8 games of the regular season on the road at Martin Methodist and Stillman College. The SSAC Tournament will be held starting May 2 in Decatur, AL.
