Softball Closes Regular Season With 4-Game Sweep of Stillman

TUSCALOOSA, AL - Softball closed out their regular season and SSAC play with a 4-game sweep of the Stillman College Tigers with an extra inning win 8-7 in game 1 and a 14-3 win in game 2 on Saturday the 27th.  The Knights finish the regular season with a 28-24 record and 15-17 in SSAC play earning the 6-seed for the SSAC tournament which starts on Thursday, May 2 in Decator, AL.  

Game 1 saw the Knights fall behind 1-0 in the 1st then picked up a pair of runs in the 3rd to take the lead as Margaret Simmons scored on a wild pitch and Taylor Sheffield singled home Madison Bivins.  The Knights got 3 more in the 6th as Emilie Lawrence scored on a wild pitch followed by back-to-back RBI doubles by Brittany Wilt and Simmons for a 5-1 lead.  The Tigers answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game at 5 and with neither team scoring in the 7th, went to extra innings.  The Knights were able to score 3 times in the top of the 8th with RBI single from Bivins to score Wilt and Simmons scored on an error by the leftfielder.  Meagan Coleman's sacrifice fly added the 3rd run for an 8-5 lead.  The Tigers got a 2-run single in the bottom of the 8th but that was all as the Knights finished the game with an 8-7 win.  Caroline Newton got the win going 8.0 innings with 3 strikeouts allowing 11 hits, 5 earned runs and 2 walks and is now 14-10 on the season.

In Game 2 the Knights sent Coleman to the circle and she shut down the Tigers for the first 4 innings while the Knights gave her 8 runs of support with 5 in the 3rd and 3 in the 4th.  In the 3rd, the Knights a 2-run double from Bivins and RBI single from Newton to get the scoring started.  An RBI double by Coleman and RBI groundout for Maggie Burkhalter put the Knights up 5-0 after 3.  Newton got an RBI double in the 4th to get the scoring started again followed by Coleman's RBI single and Lauren Heath's RBI single 4 batters later.  The Tigers got 3 in the bottom of the 5th to avoid invoking the mercy rule and Wilt's RBI fielder's choice in the 6th made the score 9-3.  Coleman allowed just 1 hit in the final 2 innings as the Knights added 5 more runs in the top of the 7th for a 14-3 lead.  Bivins scored on a passed ball and Lawrence had a 2-run single.  Wilt got a tough RBI with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch and Simmons got an RBI ground out to put the Knights up 14-3.  Coleman threw 7.0 innings allowing just 7 hits, 3 earned runs, and 3 walks while striking out 4 to earn the win and is now 5-4 on the season.

After the conclusion of the game, the SSAC announced the final seedings and schedule for the SSAC Tournament and the Knights will open play on field 4 in Decator, AL at 2PM Central (3 Eastern) against the 3-seed Martin Methodist College.
