Knights Defeat Wildcats in Renewed Rivalry

9/4/2021 7:23:00 PM

Cochran, GA - The Knights returned to action on Saturday, September 4th as they faced a familiar foe in Bethel University for the first time in two years after the Wildcats left the Southern States Athletic Conference to move to the Mid-South Conference. The rivalry picked up right where it left off.

First Half

The first half of the match was filled with action as both teams would trade shots in the beginning of the half. The Knights would pick up some momentum at the 30 minute mark as the Knights would get off multiple shots capped off with a Madelief Lammers shot that would hit the crossbar but the rebound would be put in the back of the net by Ellie Russell for her first goal of the season. The Knights would continue to overwhelm the Wildcats with shots but could not put any of them in the net as the Knights would take the 1-0 lead into halftime. The Knights outshot the Wildcats 9-4 in the first half.

Second Half

The Knights would continue to hold the momentum as they would get off more shots to start the second half. The momentum would be slowed in the 62nd minute as Ellie Richings would receive a yellow card as well as Miagh Downey in the 65th minute. The Wildcats would then take the ball into the offensive half but the Knights defense would hold strong. The Knights would get another goal in the 84th minute as Downey would find the back of the net after her first two shots of the sequence would be saved by the Wildcats goalie and the Knights would go up 2-0. The goal is Downey's second goal of the season and her 43rd career goal. The Knights would fall asleep on defense though as the Wildcats would answer back quickly in the 85th minute to cut the deficit in half. The Knights would hold on to the 2-1 lead to take the win and move to 2-1-0 on the season.

The Knights outshot the Wildcats 17-9 for the match as both teams had six shots on goals. The Knights will have a quick turnaround as they will play again on Monday, September 6th as they host the Royals from Warner University. That match is set to kick off at 11 AM EST at Nesmith Field.
