Ave Maria, FL - The Knights were back in action this weekend as they traveled to Ave Maria, Florida to take on the Gyrenes of Ave Maria University. The Knights played two games on Friday and one game on Saturday and were looking to gain some momentum going into next weekend's slate of games against some strong opponents. The Knights would start
Logan Howell in the first game of the series and would quickly fall behind 2-0 to the Gyrenes in the second inning. The Gyrenes would score another run in the third inning but the Knights would come back in the fourth inning and cut into the lead with an
Andrew Krauss two-run home run. The Knights would take the lead in the fifth inning after a sacrifice fly by
Derick Stager would tie the game at 3-3 and a two-run double by
Brian Herrera would give the Knights the 5-3 lead. The Knights would add a run in the sixth inning with a
Justin Brooks RBI single and add two insurance runs in the ninth with Herrera hitting another two-run double as the Knights would win the first game of the series 8-3. The second game of the series would feature more offensive production as the Knights would get on the board in the first inning with a
Blake Metcalfe RBI double.
Clayton Smith would hit into the fielder's choice for another run and JT RIce would be hit by a pitch with the bases loaded as the Knights would have a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Knights would add another run in the second inning after Metcalfe would hit a single and an error by the Gyrenes would allow a run to score as the Knights would go up 4-0. The Gyrenes would come back in the bottom half of the inning and tie the game up at 4-4. A solo home run by Smith in the third inning would give the lead back to the Knights but the Gyrenes would score three runs in the fourth inning as the Knights would trail 7-5. The Knights offense would light up the scoreboard in the fifth inning as they would score six runs on five hits with
Carter Lott's home run to lead off the inning highlighting the inning. The Gyrenes would score one run in the eighth inning but the Knights would add two runs in the ninth with Metcalfe hitting an RBI single and an error allowing another run to score. The Knights would give up a run in the ninth but would hold on for the 13-9 victory. The third game of the series would be played on Saturday as the Knghits would call on
JT Shields to start the game. Shields would face four batters before leaving the game due to injury so the Knights would have to call on the bullpen early to secure the win. The Knights would fall behind in the third inning as the Gyrenes would score two runs. The Knights would score two runs in the sixth inning after Stager would score on an error by the opposing pitcher and Herrera would hit a solo home run to tie the game at 2-2. The Knights would threaten again in the eighth inning as they would get a runner on third with two outs but rain would forced the game to be called and the Knights would come away with a tie. The Knights will return to action on Friday as they travel to LakePoint Sports Complex to take part in a round-robin tournament as they play three games in two days against Columbia International University, Indiana Tech, and Tennessee Wesleyan University.
