COCHRAN, Ga.- Middle Georgia State head softball coach Randi Wimpy announced on Wednesday the hiring of Skylar Chappell as the program's new assistant coach. Chappell will be joining the Knights coaching staff following a two-year stint on the staff at Auburn-Montgomery.  

Chappell served as a graduate assistant coach on the staff of AUM head coach Scottie Wilkes Laney for the past two seasons as the NCAA Division II Warhawks went a combined 84-26 on their way to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament. AUM finished an impressive 43-13 during the '26 season and finished ranked No. 10 in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) coaches poll.

Prior to her time in the dugout with AUM she served as an Assistant Coach with Georgia Highlands College of the NJCAA for one season.

"She brings tremendous energy, a strong softball background, and a genuine passion for mentoring student athletes. I know our players will benefit from her knowledge, leadership, and enthusiasm every day. This is an exciting addition to our program, and I can't wait to see the impact she will have as we continue building toward our goals."


Chappell will serve as a full-time assistant on the MGA softball staff which is coming off their first season competing as a provisional member of Division II and the Peach Belt Conference. The team previously earned three straight trips to the NAIA National Tournament including multiple Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) titles under Coach Wimpy's leadership.  

Coach Chappell earned her bachelor's degree while graduating cum laude in International Relations while competing as a member of the softball team at Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri. She would go on to earn her master's degree from AUM in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Chappell will officially begin her duties with Middle Georgia State on August 3^rd.
