Softball Opens Season With Big Wins

Fort Valley, GA - The Knights opened the season on the road as they traveled to take on the Wildcats of Fort Valley State University. The Knights had a mix of returners and new players on the field so it would be a good test to gauge where their strengths and weaknesses lie. The Knights would put Beth Eddins in the circle for the first game and she would not disappoint. Eddins would pitch lights out, giving up only two hits in the fourth inning and striking out five Wildcat batters. The Knights offense would come alive in the fourth inning as well. After leaving six runners on base throught the first three innings, the Knights would load the bases to begin the fourth inning. Karlee Back would hit a 2-run single to put the Knights up 2-0. An RBI groundout by Summer Lawrence and RBI singles by Emma Raulerson and Alexis Cosgrove would put the Knights up 5-0 after four innings of play. The Knights bats would come alive again in the sixth inning as they would score nine runs in the inning on eight hits and three Wildcat errors as they would win the first game 14-0. Raulerson went 4-for-4 in the game with three RBI's two runs scored. The Knights would turn to Mackenzie Silvia to pitch in the second game of the doubleheader. The Knights bats would continue to stay hot as they would score five runs in the first inning. Cosgrove would start the scoring with a 2-run single. Logan Blizzard would hit the Knights first home run of the season with a three-run shot to put the Knights up 5-0. In the second inning, Raulerson would draw a walk with the bases loaded, a wild pitch would bring in another run, and Cosgrove would hit another 2-run single to put the Knights up 9-0 after two innings. A sacrifice fly in the third inning by Makayla Swanson would give the Knights a 10-0 lead. A 2-run triple by the Wildcats in the bottom half of the inning would cut the lead down to 10-2 but the Knights would score two more runs in the fifth inning on a Lauren Hicks single to take a 12-2 lead that would end up being the final score. Silvia would pitch the complete game, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out 10 batters. The Knights will be back on the field on Saturday, February 5th as they are set to host the Eagles of Reinhardt University to open up the home season. First pitch will be at 1:00 PM EST.
