Cochran, GA - The Knights opened their season at home on Friday, February 9th as they hosted the Tornadoes of Talladega College. The Knights were looking to continue to build on the successful 2023 season that saw them reach the NAIA Opening Round for the first time in school history. The Knights would start off the game with two out doubles in the first inning by
Summer Lawrence and in the second inning by
Georgia Bice but would not be able to drive the runners in. The Knights would get on the scoreboard in the third inning after
Carmen Phillips led off the inning with a single and an error would allow her to reach third base.
Gabbie Haas would hit a sacrifice fly to bring her in and the Knights would take a 1-0 lead. The Knights would score another run in the inning after
Alexis Cosgrove would catch the defense offguard and steal second while
Summer Lawrence would score from third to give the Knights a 2-0 lead after three innings. The Knights bats would go quiet until the sixth inning where
Madisyn Riggins and Bice would lead off the inning with back-to-back singles.
Christina Zeppa would hit the sacrifice bunt to move both runners over and Phillips would reach on an error by the Tornadoes that would allow both runners to score.
Morgan Windham would come up later in the inning and hit a sacrifice fly and Cosgrove would hit a two-run single as the Knights would hold a 7-1 lead. The Knights would close out the game in the seventh inning to win the first game of the doubleheader. The second game of the series would be different from the first game as the Knights would get a runner on base in the first, second, and fourth innings but could not capitalize as the game would remain scoreless until the fifth inning. The Knights would break through in the fifth inning as Windham would hit a two-run single to give the Knights the 2-0 lead. The Knights would keep the Tornadoes off the scoreboard as the Knights would win the game 2-0. Riggins would get the win, pitching the complete game and throwing a two-hit shutout. The Knights will be back in action on Wednesday, February 14th as they travel to Decatur, Georgia to take on D-III Agnes Scott College. First pitch is at 3 PM EST.
