Knights Split on First Day of Gulf Shores Invitational

Gulf Shores, AL - The Knights were in action on Saturday, March 2nd as they played in the Gulf Shores Invitational in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The first day of play was rained out so Saturday would be the first official day of play. The Knights were set to take on the 6th-ranked Drovers of USAO and immediately follow up with a game against the Generals of LSU-Alexandria.

Game One

The Knights would be the visiting team on the scoreboard and they would threaten immediately as they would put two runners on in the first inning but would be unable to drive in any runs. The Knights would have another chance in the second inning as they would load the bases but would not drive in any runs. The Drovers would score two runs in the third inning and one run in the fourth inning as the Knights would be down 3-0. The Knights would get a run back in the fifth inning after an error by the Drovers would allow a run to score and the Knights would close the gap to 3-1. The Knights would tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning after singles by Morgan Windham and Christina Zeppa would allow Alexis Cosgrove to hit a two-run double. The Knights would give up a run in the bottom of the seventh inning as they would lose the game, 4-3.

Game Two

The Knights would get the chance to be the home team in the second game of the day as they faced the Generals of LSU-Alexandria. The game would turn out to be a close game as both teams would struggle to sustain any offensive momentum. The Knights would score one run in the fourth inning after Windham would steal home to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. the Knights would add on another run in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly from Madisyn Riggins, giving the Knights a 2-0 lead. The Knights would shut the Generals down as they would go on to win the game. Riggins would throw the shutout, giving up two hits and striking out three batters.

The Knights will be back on the field on Sunday, March 3rd as they will take on the Owls of William Woods University, followed by the Cougars of Saint Xavier University. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 PM CST.
