Softball Wraps Up Gulf Shores Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Knights were back on the diamond on Sunday, February 1st after having Saturday off. They were set to take on the Tigers of West Alabama and the Blazers of Valdosta State University. The Knights started off the season on Friday, going 1-1, and looked to come away with two more wins.

Game One - West Alabama

The Knights had a tough day with the Tigers as they gave up three runs in the first inning and five runs in the third inning to fall behind 8-0. The Knights offense came around in the fifth inning as they loaded the bases for Jada Akeson to hit an RBI single and Mel Bullock to hit a two-run single to cut the lead down to 8-3. The Tigers scored a run in the top of the sixth inning but the Knights answered back with an RBI triple from Sarah Latham. The Tigers scored five more runs in the seventh inning and the Knights lost 14-4.

Notable Performances

Jada Akeson and Mel Bullock each went 2-for-4 while Sarah Latham went 2-for-3 at the plate. Riley Haley struck out six batters in 4 and 1/3 innings of relief.

Game Two - Valdosta State

The offense performed better in the second game of the day as the Knights got off to a better start. A lead off double by Cassidy Ross led to an RBI single by Jenna Kirkland to put the Knights up 1-0. The Knights later loaded the bases to set up Torrey Cummings for a two-run single as they led 3-0 after the top of the first inning. The Blazers came back in the bottom half of the inning to score one run and scored five more runs in the second inning to put the Knights behind 6-3. The Knights closed the gap in the fifth inning with a solo home run from Mel Bullock to make it a 6-4 game. The Knights got the offense rolling again in the seventh inning as they got RBI singles from Madison Cosgrove and Kaylee Oliver with a fielder's choice that scored a run as they grabbed the lead heading into the bottom half of the seventh inning. The Blazers were able to counter with two runs as they walked off the Knights 8-7.

Notable Performances

Torrey Cummings went 3-for-4 at the plate while Madison Cosgrove went 2-for-3 and Caroline Albritton went 2-for-4.

What's Up Next

The Knights will open their home schedule on Wednesday, February 4th when they host the Barons of Brewton-Parker Christian University. First pitch is scheduled for 4 PM EST.
