PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Knights were back on the court on Saturday, September 5th as they wrapped up the UNCP Invitational with two more matches against Virginia State and UNC-Pembroke. The Knights were still looking for their first win on the season.
Match One - Virginia State
A slow start in the first set saw the Knights lose the first four points but they were able to come back and tie the set at 8-8. The Trojans used a five-point run to pull ahead again bu the Knights found a way to keep coming back as they tied the set at 15-15. The set remained close until the end when the Trojans won the final four points and the Knights lost the set 25-20. The second set was close as the two teams traded the lead. The Trojans used a five-point run to break a 9-9 tie and a six-point run late in the set to hand the Knights a 25-18 loss. The Knights jumped out to an early lead in the third set and the teams used multiple runs to trade the lead. The Trojans used a four-point run to break a 10-10 tie but the Knights close the gap to one point late in the set. The Trojans won seven of the last nine points to pull away and the Knights lost 25-19.
Match Two - UNC-Pembroke
The first set started off as a back-and-forth battle until the Braves grabbed a four point lead. The Knights used a five-point run to take the lead and later extended their lead to four points. The Braves cut the gap down to one point but the Knights won five of the last six points to win the set 25-20. The Braves stormed back in the second set as the Knights fell behind early and saw multiple runs from the Braves lead to a 25-14 set that tied the match at 1-1. The Knights the first three points of the third set but the Braves fought back and used multi-point runs to take the lead and win the set 25-13. The teams traded the lead early in the fourth set until a five-point run by the Braves put them up six points. Another four-point run extended their lead and the Knights were unable to match them as they lost the set 25-16
The losses puts the Knights record to 0-8 as they prepare for their next matches on Friday, September 11th as they face Auburn-Montgomery and UA-Fort Smith. Tip off is scheduled for 1:30 PM EST.
