#12 Women's Tennis Loses Season Opener at AUM

MONTGOMERY, AL - The women's tennis team opened their season with a 5-2 loss to Division II (former SSAC and NAIA National Champion) member Auburn University-Montgomery on Friday, February 1.  The 7 games played to make up the final score in the NCAA  counts doubles as 1 point total in the match with who have takes at least 2 out of 3 doubles and each singles match counts for a point.  In the NAIA, the doubles count as 3 separate points and each singles as a point for 9 total to make up the match.  

The Knights women lost the double 2-1 with Franziska Nobis and Maike Nagele defeating Sofia Navarrao and Julia Enderink 7-5 at the number 1 spot while the Knights lost the other two doubles 6-4 in each.  

In singles, the NAIA 33rd ranked Nagele defeated Svenja Petri 6-0, 6-2 to take the number 1 spot for the Knights and Jacqueline Heer defeated Sofia Mustre at the number 6 spot 7-6, 6-0 for the 2 points by the Knights.  The Knights played closely in the remaining matches but lost each for the 5-2 lost.  Other scores were:

2 Foessmeir (AUM) def. Rajovic 6-2, 7-5
#3 Navarro (AUM) def. Nobis 6-4, 6-1
#4 De La Torre (AUM) def. Pereyra 6-7, 7-6, 10-7
#5 Enderink (AUM) def. Persiani 7-5, 7-6

The Knights next match will be February 14 in Mobile, AL against #9 William Carey University in the SSAC Roundup.  The Knights will face #23 Mobile and Blue Mountain College on the 15th and finish the Roundup with #21 Loyola.  The team will play their first home match of the season against #10 Indiana Wesleyan on February 28 at 4PM at John Drew Smith Tennis Center (JDS) in Macon.  The team hosts a round robin invitational at JDS in Macon on March 1-3 which will feature a plethora of ranked matchups.
