MACON, Ga.- Middle Georgia State University has announced a new Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) for the upcoming academic year in the appointment of Rebecca Edwards to the role. Edwards takes over for Professor
Bill Hervey who served the University with excellence as FAR since 2014.
The position of Faculty Athletics Representative plays a crucial role in acting as a bridge between the faculty and the athletic department while fostering communication and collaboration for the academic success of student-athletes.
A role that is required by both the NAIA and NCAA and appointed by the University President, Edwards rose to the top of a list of qualified faculty due to her passion for helping students and her background in and around sports.
"We are thrilled to welcome Professor Edwards into this role and look forward to working alongside her to continue to see student-athletes thrive in the classroom and their respective sport," said
Michael Brown, MGA Director of Athletics.
"It became clear in early conversations with Professor Edwards that she deeply cares for students and wants to see them succeed in all areas of their experience which made for a natural fit in the FAR role," continued Brown.
Edwards is no stranger to Middle Georgia as she earned her bachelor's degree in Communication from Macon State College before going on to earn her master's degree from Florida State University. She would also go on to earn graduate certificates in Digital Media and Sports Production from FSU as well.
Edwards currently teaches broadcasting and film production classes on both the Cochran and Macon campuses while overseeing student broadcast internships as well as being involved with the Georgia Film Academy.
Prior to returning to Middle Georgia as a faculty member Edwards carved out a 25+ year professional career in the television and film industry which prepared her well to use those experiences to teach courses such as Media Production, Documentary Film Production, and TV News Production.
"I am excited to step into the role of Faculty Athletic Representative," Edwards said. "Supporting our student athletes both in the classroom and in competition is rewarding. I love teaching and being a part of their college journey. I look forward to serving as a resource and advocate for student athletes as they balance academics and athletics here at MGA."
The FAR role is integral to ensuring academic integrity amongst all student-athletes at MGA. The focal points of the role include operating as a checks and balances for the institution to ensure the athletic department is complying with NCAA rules and regulations, including those related to eligibility, recruiting, and financial aid. The FAR also is an advocate for the well-being of student-athletes, addressing their academic concerns, and helping ensure they have a positive overall student experience.
Edwards will officially begin her duties as FAR in August.
